From what I can remember the only thing my dad told me about this life when he first came to Britain was about the sign on the doors wherever he tried to get a place to stay, “NO Blacks No Irish No Dogs”
Either he was too tired from all the work he did, or he just didn’t want to talk about it, though later in his life he did start to mention a few things, which was always helped with a bottle or 2 of bells whiskey, so when the BBC released a documentary about the lives of the West Indian immigrants 1950’s and 1960’s.
You know watching these programs made me realise how lucky I really am, I admit even in the 70’s and early 80’s with all the skinheads and the national front, I understood racism all to well, but I cant imagine what it must of been like for my father.
I’m so lucky living the sweet life I have in this country, and I truly believe its all down to our Mothers and Fathers, for they put up with so much formidable obstacles to give us, their children a better life.
Thank you Dad
